Shannen Doherty. The name brings up a whirlwind of emotions – fiery Brenda Walsh from Beverly Hills, 90210, the unstoppable Prue Halliwell in Charmed, and a fighter's spirit that shone brighter than any Hollywood spotlight.
Yesterday, the world lost a piece of its sunshine. Shannen's passing after a courageous battle with cancer leaves a void that can't be filled. But instead of dwelling on the sadness, I want to celebrate the woman who brought so much joy to our lives.
For many of us, Shannen was more than a celebrity. She was a friend on screen, a sassy sister we all wanted, and a role model who showed us that strength doesn't come from always being perfect. She wasn't afraid to be vulnerable, to break the mold, and to fight for what she believed in.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and spoke candidly to PEOPLE in November 2023 about her Stage 4 breast cancer, which had by then spread to her bones, saying at the time that she didn't "want to die."
[Following her 2015 diagnosis, the actress revealed less than two years later in April 2017 that she had gone into remission, however, by 2019, the cancer returned. Doherty announced her diagnosis of metastatic stage 4 cancer publicly in 2020. Then, in June of 2023, the actress shared that the cancer had spread to her brain and that she had undergone surgery.
Doherty posted on Instagram on June 6, 2023, sharing in a candid and emotional message that the cancer had spread to her brain. Then, later the same month in another post, that she had undergone surgery in January 2023 — describing the fear she felt ahead of the procedure as "overwhelming" — to remove a brain tumor, which she had named Bob.
“He had to get removed and dissected to see his pathology,” she told PEOPLE in November 2023. “It was definitely one of the scariest things I’ve ever been through in my entire life.”
Despite that, the actress was determined to continue working as she lived with the disease.]
Whether you loved her, hated her -- or loved to hate her Shannen Doherty's bad girl reputation from the 90s was mostly the creative parazzi starved for new headlines in an all-star primetime program that -- let's face it -- took the world by storm and with it paid heavy hand in tabloid hype.
Despite clashing with the late producer Aaron Spelling, she continued working with him. This suggests Spelling respected her talent and the rumors of a ruined career were exaggerated.
Her characters were iconic. Brenda was the epitome of teenage angst, navigating love, loss, and self-discovery with a fierceness that resonated with a generation. Prue, the eldest Halliwell sister, was the protector, the voice of reason, but also the one who indulged in a little retail therapy – a relatable queen!
But Shannen was more than just the characters she played. She was an advocate for cancer research, a voice for those battling the disease, and an inspiration to never give up hope. Even as she fought her own battles, she used her platform to raise awareness and spread strength.
Shannen's legacy extends far beyond Hollywood. She leaves behind a reminder to cherish every moment, to fight for what we believe in, and to love fiercely.
Today, we mourn the loss of a phenomenal actress, a true fighter, and a beacon of light. But tomorrow, we remember her spirit, her passion, and the fire that will continue to burn brightly in our hearts.
Thank you, Shannen, for the memories, the laughs, and for reminding us all that we are strong, capable, and worthy. You will be deeply missed.
